We are excited to be kicking off the 2019-2020 school year with an entirely new Homeschool curriculum.
New this year PMEC will be offering science classes twice a month, on the first and third Tuesday of each month beginning Tuesday, September 17. We have also added a social element to our sessions. Meeting more frequently will be beneficial for students to maintain the information, while also expanding the overall development of each student. For our 5-7year olds we have extended the time from 1 hour to 2 hours.
The structure for each session:
1 Hour Education
1 Hour Play/Social Interaction
The classes will most often be divided by age during the first hour.
5 to 7 year olds
8 to 10 year olds
11 to 15 year olds
Ages may combine for the second hour for gaga ball; Broom Hockey, Charades, Pictionary, and various group building games.
Please find below an outline of what we planned for each month. The theme for the month will be spread out between the two classes. Science lessons relating to the theme will be covered. For example, Halloween Science will cover the three states of matter with Ghost Hands and dry ice experiments.
Hope you can join us!
Minimum number of participants is 6 per class
Blast into Fall (September): Let’s learn how rockets are propelled. We will watch live footage; make stomp and Alka Seltzer rockets; play with menthos and coke. Let’s start the school year with a blast!
Halloween Science (October): Halloween isn’t scary — it’s awesomely cool science time! We have two weeks of creepy experiments examining ghost poop, dry ice, fake blood, and more.
Thanksgiving Science (November): Let’s talk turkey! Why does turkey make us tired? How do our senses impact what we taste and want to eat? Two weeks of exploring food science.
Holiday Season Science (December)
Come grow the Grinch’s heart! Examine how laser lights work. On a more cultural note, what do people around the globe celebrate in December i.e. games, food, traditions of the winter solstice, Haunaka, Christmas, Kuanza, etc.
The Science of Snow (January)
How does nature make snow? Let’s make our own! We will capture snow flakes (if the weather cooperates!), make snow cones, talk about the different types of snow and who lives there. We will go snowshoeing or a hike to see if we can find any traces of life in the woods.
How Sweet it is! (February)
Candy is front and center in the science lab this month as we look at the science behind candy and what can candy teach us about science. We will make your own rock candy, blow up a marshmallow, and learn about erosion through Skittles! Since this is “attraction” month, we will look at magnetism the second half.
April Fool’s! (March)
We will teach you some cool science “tricks” you can play on your family on April Fool’s Day! (Can’t describe them or else we will give away the surprise!)
All about the Egg (April)
Spring and Easter always bring to mind images of eggs — colored ones, fancy ones, newly laid ones! We will talk about the science of eggs and maybe walk on a dozen or two. We will talk about the science of dying them and eat one or two of you like. And let’s not forget the bunny! Why are bunnies so important for the environment? We will learn why!
Springing into May
The last class will be an End-of-the-Year party to celebrate a school of Holiday Science at PMEC! We will be outside looking at what is happening in the woods and pond at PMEC.
